Free Advice

Here's the deal and you should listen to me because I am older than you and I know stuff.

When you are at that crucial moment at the supermarket when you are deciding between buying the real Oreo cookies at $4.49 a package or the $3.79 knock-off cheapo store brand Whoreos or whatever they call them, go with the certified name-brand goodness.

 Doubleduo

I know you'll be thinking, "Yeah, but i can save almost a whole dollar on the store brand and cookies are cookies so what's the diff?" Wrong, Sir, Wrong.

You will regret the crappy Not Oreos with every bite. Some things are just worth paying full price for and chocolate sandwich creme cookies are one of them.

By-the-way, some things are not worth paying full price for too. If you want to buy the supermarket store brand bottle of hydrogen peroxide to save a few pennies from the name brand you will get no argument from me.

That is all.

2008 Ends On A Down Note!!

Well, this must be some sort of record for how fast a New Year's resolution has been broken. It's not even midnight on the 31st and already it looks like my plan to marry Zoey Deschanel in 2009 has been foiled.

That cheating bitch ... um, i mean delightful ingenue.... has up and gotten engaged to another man.

Zooeycab460

Yep, once again the pasty, pudgy rock star wins out over us regular guys. How do I have a chance against Ben Gibbard, leader of Death Cab For Cutie? Well, I could take him in arm wrestling but not in romancing the ladies. He's a star with a guitar so I was two strikes down before Zoey met either one of us.

I fell in love with Miss Deshanel in Almost Famous but it was Elf that cemented my resolve that she was the perfect woman for me. I almost love her enough to go see her in that new Jim Carrey movie too. Almost. Plus her She & Him duets album with M. Ward is almost too much goodness for me to bear.

Sigh. Well, this way is better anyway I guess; an indie hipster's fantasy that will make a lot of people happy to read about. Zooey and Ben will probably get married in Woodstock, NY and his best man will be Devendra Banhart and the Fleet Foxes will be the wedding band.

Wishing you better luck with your 2009!! Talk to you on the 5th. Courage.

Aloha! It's Christmas Day

Hey KROQ fan. Here's the holiday card I sent out to my friends and family last night. Thought I might share it with you here too:

"Donna and I are lame. Even though we have puppies at home this year which would guarantee a killer holiday card photo we never got around to taking one. That is your loss because they are really cute.

That doesn’t mean we are not thinking of you this Christmas Eve though; especially if you are somewhere cold and snowy because we are sending this message overlooking the beach in Hawaii right now.

Today we drove the road to Hana (on the other side of Maui) and back and stopped the car to take a photo of a church on the side of the road.

This is St. Joseph’s and it was built in 1862. We didn’t notice until we got out of the car that a beautiful rainbow had formed overhead. I hope you enjoy the picture along with warm holiday greetings from our family to yours.

Xmascard08

(Donna does not approve of this churchy message and apologizes to her Jewish family and friends. Mazal Tov!)"

Meli Kalikimaka to you all. I will try to start posting here more regularly and look forward to talking to you on the radio again January 5th, 2009.

Aloha!

Kevin & Bean Cinco De La Tarde? Whaaaaaat?

Okay, okay, okay, here's the deal. Everything we do, we do for you. You told us you wanted less Kevin & Bean and more music in the 9 a.m. hour so we have implemented that starting this week.

So now Kat is on 9 -1, Sluggo works 1-5 and the new Kevin & Bean Cinco De La Tarde show is on 5-6 p.m.

That's right, an all-new hour of Kevin & Bean comedy goodness each weekday afternoon. Previously only available to the us poor schmucks who have to get up at the crack of ass, now you can also hear us on the ride home.

Of course if you're just impossible to please, if no time is a good time, then don't forget the podcasts are available 24/7.

Let me know what you think of the bonus hour in the afternoon by emailing me here. Thanks!

Ho Ho Who You Calling A Ho?

Why is this my favorite time of year? Lots of reasons including the appearance of pumpkin flavored food and beverages available in stores everywhere. Pumpkin spice lattes at 7-11, Dreyer's Pumpkin ice-cream, Pumpkin pancakes at IHOP, etc. Yum!

I also get excited starting about mid-September each year when the new Christmas albums start coming out. I love holiday music, listen to it year-round and have collected it for many years. I even run a website called ChristmasMusic Everyday.com where I stream a different Yuletide mp3 every day of the year.

I launched it last Thanksgiving and in the year since have offered songs by everyone from R.E.M. to Isaac Hayes, My Morning Jacket to Bob Seger, AC-DC to Britney Spears and hundreds more, including jazz, country and novelty records.

Check it out here and if you want to get in the mood with just a few of KROQ's most popular Christmas songs over the years here's a playlist for you.

First Tuesday In November

I only have twenty minutes or so before I have to walk out the door but here are a few November 4th thoughts until I have to go. Blogging is just like talking to oneself I've learned.

1. It's almost over. Whoever wins the presidency tonight should try hard to be the president of all Americans, not just the ones who voted for him.

2. What will become of Sarah Palin if she is not elected Vice President? Will she continue to govern Alaska where she is enormously popular and then run for a second term there? Or will this taste of the mainland make her want to run for the Senate or President as soon as possible?

Or does she even need politics now? She might be a heckuva talk show host or cable news personality.

Or maybe she'll stay home when her term is up and spend some time raising her herd of kids. Let Todd bring home the moose meat for a while.

3. It's a shame my vote for president in Washington and yours in California don't really count. Thanks to the stupid Electoral College all the chips go to whoever gets 50 percent plus one as expected. Votes for losing candidates should deliver some electoral votes too I think. Or let's just go to a popular vote nationwide.

4. Words I don't care to hear again for a long long while: Change, Maverick, Hope, Plumber, Yes, No, 8.

5. Maybe even more people would be interested in voting if we called it Erection Day instead.

6. I wish there was at least one black thing that we knew Senator Obama was into. I feel that he "whites it up"too much to not scare old people and racists. Whether he loves watermelon or Colt .45 or Tyler Perry movies I don't care but just be real. (Sure, Or B Real too for that matter)

7. I have great respect for John McCain and was planning on voting for him until a few weeks ago. Here's how he lost my support. During one of the debates he looked me in the eye and said he was going to end earmarks and expose the politicians that attached all that pork to bills in Congress before they would vote for them. Then days later he voted for the 700,000,000,000 financial bailout package without a peep.

That thing started out as a three page bill to rescue essential industries and by the time it passed it had bloated to hundreds of pages filled with favors and money to special interest groups. Had Senator McCain stood up to that I think he would have won the election today easily. He may still - polling is still going on as I write this - but at least that would have been a way to show he wasn't just more of the same.

8. Sure, I wish Senator Obama would have done the same thing but it wasn't his issue, unfortunately. And he probably is more of the same too. That's what scared me about him for so long. If he wins we'll see. I hope I'm wrong but the honeymoon will be very very short with the troubles we've got in this country right now.

9. Why does 7-11 only offer their pumpkin spice latte through Halloween week? Lots of people eat pumpkin pie with Thanksgiving dinner too. Extend it another month, m'kay?

10. There is no number ten but I have the Asperger's Syndrome and can't end on an odd number.

The Midnight Special

Just got back in from the party although I'm Bean so I left just as it was really getting started. Thanks to the Medusa Lounge in Silverlake. They are an awesome club and I am certain we will be back. Great staff, atmosphere, sound system and you know I am all about shaking that ass on the dance floor.

Look for more photos from the party of our listeners and members of the Kevin & Bean show staff here on KROQ.com (Kevin's Criss Angel costume was phenomenal.)

I only took one shot all night and it is because our morning show phone screener Miss Cleo is so sweet that I wanted to share it. You can see the care she put into her costume here but what you can't tell in this picture is how amazing she is and what respect I have for her as a colleague and a human. It's nice to recognize people sometimes for the beauty within I think.

Thursday Night 9:28 PM

Oh, I forgot. I am in Los Angeles today for the first time in months. With nothing else to do tonight I walked over to the Beverly Center. Three quick things because then it's time for 30 Rock.

1) The turkey sandwich you get at the Tommy Burger looks NOTHING like the one in the photo behind the counter. The real one is half the size as the one pictured and probably didn't even come from the same bird.

2. Hey, Foot Locker? Has anyone ever bought the t-shirt you sell that reads, "We put the NASTY in DYNASTY?"

3. And this is for reals, people. Escalator etiquette. Not hard. Easy even. Stand to the right and walk to the left. It is like a two-lane road. You don't drive down the middle of a two-lane road do you? Or slow down/stop in one lane so no one can pass, do you? Then learn how to make the escalator work for the other shoppers too. Word is bond.

Thursday Night 9:09 PM

Surfing the news while I watch Jim & Pam struggle with their long distance relationship. Can you believe this? I mean, can you freaking believe this?

23 percent of Texans believe Senator Obama is a Muslim.

WTF???? How is that possible? Are there not American newspapers or television stations in Texas? Do they not have the internet or radio? How. Is. That. Possible? I'm serious.
